Orlando origin and meaning
Italian, from Germanic via Old French
Italian form of Roland, from Germanic elements meaning 'famous' and 'land'
Orlando is the Italian form of Roland, the hero of the medieval Song of Roland, and it carried the story further in Ariosto's epic poem Orlando Furioso. Shakespeare used it for the romantic hero of As You Like It. In America it has been recorded since 1911, peaked in 1987, and now also carries an unavoidable link to the Florida city.
