Omer origin and meaning

Hebrew; also a form of Omar in some traditions

Hebrew 'sheaf of grain' — the omer was also the grain measure of the Exodus story; separately used as a variant of Arabic Omar

Omer carries two traditions in US data: the Hebrew word-name for a sheaf of grain, familiar from the counting of the Omer between Passover and Shavuot, and a transliteration of the Turkish and Arabic name Ömer/Omar. American use is over a century old, peaking back in 1918, and is now small and falling. Which tradition a given Omer comes from depends on the family.
