Maximilian origin and meaning

Latin and German, a documented Renaissance coinage

Coined by combining Latin Maximus, 'greatest', with Aemilianus — in effect, 'greatest Aemilian'

Maximilian has a rare, datable birth certificate: the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick III created it in the 15th century by fusing Maximus and Aemilianus for his son, the future Maximilian I. The grand full form peaked in US use in 2015 and has since yielded ground to plain Max and Maximiliano.
