Casimir origin and meaning

Polish form of Slavic Kazimierz

Uncertain — the Slavic elements are read both as 'destroyer of peace' and 'proclaimer of peace', and scholarship does not settle it

Casimir is the English and French form of Polish Kazimierz, the name of Polish kings and of Saint Casimir, patron of Poland and Lithuania. The name's two elements, kazi and mir, support opposite readings that are both seriously argued, so the meaning is honestly uncertain. In America it peaked in 1919 with Polish immigration and is now rising again from a low base.
