Adelaide origin and meaning

Germanic, via French Adélaïde

'Noble kind' — from adal, 'noble,' and heid, 'kind, type'

Adelaide is the French form of the Germanic name Adelheid, 'noble kind.' It was carried by Saint Adelaide, empress in the 10th century, and by Queen Adelaide, wife of William IV, after whom the Australian city was named. A 19th-century favourite, it faded, then revived; it is slightly down from its 2016 recent peak.
